The RISC-V architecture, which is considered to be in line with the X86 and Arm architectures in the future, is accelerating its growth in the domestic market.
During the second China RISC-V Industry Forum in Dishui Lake held on November 30, Dai Weimin, chairman of the China RISC-V Industry Alliance, founder, chairman and president of Xinyuan, pointed out in his speech that RISC-V began to be promoted in China in July 2018. Although the industry had proposed the direction of chip independence at that time, especially for CPU, Chinese enterprises reacted more slowly in RISC-V than India, Russia and the European Union.
The reason, he thought, was that the development of CPU architecture had been supported by an enterprise or a government department for many years and cost a lot of money. Suddenly, faced with an open source architecture, most people might hesitate at the beginning - can RISC-V rise?
In July 2018, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economic and Information Technology took the lead in issuing the relevant RISC-V support policies in a distinctive manner across the country, and since then, the domestic industry has entered a period of rapid evolution.
In September of that year, the Shanghai IC Industry Association recommended Xinyuan as the first chairman unit to take the lead in establishing the China RISC-V Industry Alliance (CRVIC). In just 10 days, more than 50 companies, including Ziguang Zhanrui, Huada, Huami, Junzheng, and nearly 10 key universities, including Fudan, Jiaotong University, Tongji, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Southeast China, China University of Science and Technology, Huaxin Investment Shanghai Branch and Shanghai Semiconductor Industry Investment Fund, have joined the "China RISC-V Industry Alliance". Until October 2018, the formal founding meeting of "China RISC-V Industry Alliance" was held.
Guo Yiwu, secretary-general of Shanghai Integrated Circuit Industry Association, said that * * RISC-V has the technological advantages of simplification, low power consumption, modularity, scalability and so on. In recent years, RISC-V ecosystem is rising rapidly worldwide, becoming an important innovation focus in semiconductor industry, Internet of Things, edge computing and other emerging applications**
Participants also pointed out that instruction set is the cornerstone of industrial development, and the traditional complex instruction set architecture is not suitable for the current era of Internet of Things. RISC-V, as an open and globally advanced simplified instruction set, will have great promise.
**"According to statistics, there are 10 billion shipments of RISC-V in the world, and Chinese companies account for more than 50%. RISC-V is expected to become a new turning point after the X86 and Arm architecture, providing opportunities for China to grasp the development initiative of the chip industry." * * Guo Yiwu continued.
He pointed out that since the establishment of the Global RISC-V Foundation in 2015, the number of members has continued to increase to more than 3100, including Google, Huawei, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Samsung, IBM and other global first-tier manufacturers. The voice of these enterprises in their respective segments plays an important role in the promotion of RISC-V.
More and more enterprises in China are also investing in the ecological construction of RISC-V. Guo Yiwu said that over the past four years, the "China RISC-V Industry Alliance" has more than 150 member units, and has done a lot of work in building an industrial exchange platform, promoting RISC-V science and education, promoting the collaborative development of member units, and seeking support from policy resources. It will play a good role in gradually forming the RISC-V ecological chain that runs through IP core chips, software, systems, applications and other links, and in obtaining the promotion of RISC-V from all walks of life including "government, industry, education and research".
According to Dai Weimin's introduction on the spot, 10 chips were recommended during the first Dishui Lake Forum last year. By October 2022, two companies had shipped more than one million chips, and several companies had shipped more than ten thousand or more than one hundred thousand chips, most of which were used in the consumer market. Due to the long certification period of car-grade chips, some companies still need some time to ship a large number of chips.
